About
The Hewell Kids’ Kidney Center offers state-of-the-art nephrology care for children with a wide variety of kidney conditions.
Our multidisciplinary team of experts includes two board-certified pediatric nephrologists as well as nurse practitioners, renal nurses, nutritionists and social workers. Services include outpatient and inpatient care for children from birth to 21 years of age with congenital or acquired renal disease. Kidney biopsies are performed on children of all ages. Kidney replacement therapies such as peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis and continuous replacement therapies are offered in the inpatient setting. A home peritoneal dialysis program is available for patients with end-stage kidney disease awaiting kidney transplantation.
Kidney transplantation is performed at Tampa General Hospital through a combined program with the University of South Florida. The post-transplant care of our patients is done at Arnold Palmer Hospital, using a team approach, with the expertise of nutritionists and social workers during our weekly kidney transplant clinic.
The clinical interest of our division includes the care of children with end-stage kidney disease, metabolic bone disease, acute kidney failure in newborns and its long-term complications, obesity-related kidney disorders, systemic lupus nephritis and kidney transplantation. We have a large inpatient neonatal department and work closely with our neonatologist and perineonatologist to provide full-spectrum kidney care, including renal replacement therapy for newborns of all sizes.
