New Minimally Invasive Surgeon Joins Winnie Palmer Hospital

New Physician Brings Experience In Various Women’s Health Issues
ORLANDO, Fla (October 10, 2011) – Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, an Academic Center of Excellence in minimally invasive surgery, has added a new surgeon to its team of women’s health specialists.
Liza M. Colimon, MD, FACOG, is the newest physician to join Winnie Palmer Hospital’s Center for Advanced Gynecologic Surgery and Pelvic Medicine.
Dr. Colimon is an advanced specialist in minimally invasive and robotic surgery, and gynecologic disorders such as chronic pelvic pain, vulvodynia, vestibulitis, pelvic floor disease, incontinence, and interstitial cystitis. She has also completed an American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists accredited fellowship in Advanced Gynecologic Disorders and Minimally Invasive Surgery.
Dr. Colimon received her medical degree at the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine, Chicago, and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. She is a board certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist and a Fellow in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. From 2006 to 2009, Dr. Colimon practiced on faculty as an Associate Gynecologist/Obstetrician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, providing a full spectrum of consultation and gynecologic surgical services, and minimally invasive surgery as the only gynecologist for three inner-city health centers.
Winnie Palmer Hospital’s minimally invasive surgery program has shown significant growth recently. In fiscal year 2010, 75 percent of surgeries at the hospital were minimally invasive – an increase of more than 40 percent since 2008. The hospital also continues to exceed the national average for open versus minimally invasive hysterectomies. Sixty-seven percent of hysterectomies performed at Winnie Palmer Hospital are minimally invasive, while the national average is about 20 percent.
