Patient Education & FAQs
How long should I wait before calling for a follow-up appointment after surgery?
Your postoperative appointment can be made on the day of discharge. This allows enough time to obtain an appointment within the first three weeks of surgery.
When can I shower after surgery?
Usually two to three days after surgery, your incision is closed. Submerging yourself in water is not recommended. If incisions still are draining, cover them with sterile dressing after they have been cleaned and are dry.
Should I take my pain medication if I am not having pain?
Do not use your pain medication if you are not having pain. Use your pain medicine sparingly, as you may run out. Take only as needed. Use more for sleep at night, and try to use less during the day.
What happens at my first visit after surgery?
The first visit after surgery is usually a wound/incision check and removal of sutures and/ or staples. The physician will meet with you to explain the surgery and the plan of care.
If I am being referred by my primary care physician or if I am a new patient, what should I bring to my first appointment?
For your first office appointment, please arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment to complete any/all paperwork. Please bring your identification, insurance card and notes from your referring physician. All X-ray, CAT scan or MRI films should be brought to your first appointment. This allows the physician to review any information that would assist in your treatment.
